Saturn Retrograde in Aquarius

Saturn Retrograde in Aquarius

Every year Saturn goes retrograde and it gives us time to review the last 6 – 7 months.  This is the perfect time to do the necessary checks and balances, which will kick our ass if we don’t see to them first.  That’s because Saturn is the Lord of Karma and when he is retrograde it is time for the karmic cleanse. Saturn is retrograde from May 23 – October 10 and he will be bringing the discipline and leadership that we all need.

This retrograde will be interesting because Saturn has been moving through Aquarius —the sign of the humanitarian and the progressive, since last December.  It is rather obvious that we are in the midst of sweeping changes to society, and that is predominately due to Saturn and Jupiter (currently in Pisces until July 28) both moving through this fixed air sign.  As the collective consciousness continues to transform we can feel this shift building to a crescendo. With Saturn retrograde, it is time to re-evaluate how we live, and how we can do that in harmony with people and the planet.

Last year Saturn was retrograde in Capricorn, a sign he is most often associated with and rules. However, Saturn is also the ancient ruler of Aquarius, co-ruling with Uranus (ironically his father, and not the best when it comes to parenting). Saturn is squaring Uranus in Taurus all year. A square brings internal conflict, and Taurus represents the things that we love and value: money, food, shelter, etc., and Aquarius is about the future of humanity.  As Uranus continues to square Saturn he is literally pushing him, all year long, into seeing those foundational things from a different vantage point — constantly giving contrast so we can push past the old and embrace the future.

With Saturn back-tracking we might feel the need to rebel against anything that seems to be holding us back.  That could include, jobs, friends, relationships, personal goals, etc. Chances are we will revisit our own personal dreams and needs and realize that it’s time to brake out of old patterns so we can embrace and acknowledge our growth.

Taking a look at the big-picture, globally this is about changing systems that have become outdated and no longer serve that values (that are changing) or the greater good of the collective.  Saturn loves structure, but Saturn retrograde takes a look at what no longer is working and determines the best way to fix it.  This is accomplished by creating new pathways and opportunities for leadership that help everyone as we move into the future.

Take a look at your birth chart; you can get a free one at Foxy Astrology.  You will want to see what house is ruled by Aquarius in your chart and that will tell you what area of life you will be reviewing during this retrograde.  For all of us, this retrograde will impact the groups that we are a part of and could spark your activism. Perhaps you will change political affiliation or start a new spiritual practice. Whatever “it” is, it will become more evident as the summer comes to a close.  Saturn still has several more years —and a few more retrogrades— in Aquarius so this is just the beginning of a long transformation.

Saturn is the great guru, and sometimes his lessons can be challenging, but ultimately we are here to learn. If we pay attention to what Saturn is teaching us individually we can make quantum leaps in our own destinies and those of the collective.

Chariklo in Aquarius – until February 2028

Chariklo in Aquarius – until February 2028

You might be asking yourself, “WTF is Chariklo!” Ok, so she’s a bit on the esoteric-side, but if you gotten this far…come closer, ahem, but not that close.  Chariklo is Chiron’s wife and she is all about the boundaries.

You know who Chiron is, right?  Besides the hubby of the most noble and giving soul in the universe, Chariklo — he is the wounded healer. Most astrologers treat him like a planet these days even though he is an asteroid, but not just any asteroid. Chiron is a centaur that represents that wound that you get to carry around with you for your entire incarnation on your current wheel of fortune.  Just wait until you hit 50/51 and you get to experience your first Chiron return.  Good times!

Chariklo recently entered into Aquarius where she will remain until early February of 2028.  As the 11th sign of the zodiac, Aquarius rules your social circle—yes, even all those ridiculous groups that you join on social media for no good reason. The 11th house also possesses a humanitarian aspect to things — especially in relationship to any projects that you may get involved with.

There is a ginormous stellium (when three or more planets, celestial objects, etc., converge in a sign or house) that is growing in Aquarius with the Sun, Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury Rx, and Pallas Athena.  That is a lot of energy in that 11th house, not to mention the Aquarius New Moon will be happening on 2/11.  Now Chariklo is in there for the long-haul (2/2028) so she is a little late to the party, but she is ready to get down with her bad self — literally just herself.

Even though Chariklo is classified as a centaur asteroid, technically she is a nymph. She holds space for her hubby, the wounded healer (Chiron), but she also represents the personal process of individuation.  She holds the “space” that you need to achieve a sense of “self” that is separate from the others so you can consciously co-exist in this world. If your mind is blown, fantastic!  You are in the right place.

So as Chariklo moves through Aquarius/11th house, this eight-year transit will be about establishing boundaries for yourself in relationship to the groups of which you are a part.  It is important that you can see beyond the boundaries of the current collective social structure. That is why being conscious about the groups you join or participate in is important.

Time is the most precious commodity that we have; Chariklo can help you to make sure that you don’t waste another precious minute.  Chariklo will give you the grace to look beyond the boundaries of your existing social networks so that you can co-exist with your peeps, without losing your sense of self.

Look and see where Aquarius is in your chart; you can go to Foxy Astrology to get a free birth chart. See what house Aquarius rules in your chart.  That is the area of life where you might consider where your current relationship boundaries stand and if they need a bit of an overhaul.  This won’t happen overnight, but you might already be seeing some signs of where you need to establish, or reestablish, your sovereign space.

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius – Jan. 30-Feb. 20, 2021

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius – Jan. 30-Feb. 20, 2021

Ready for a rewind of the mind?  The first Mercury retrograde of 2021 is here and will herald an entire year of Mercury retrograding in air signs.

Mercury goes retrograde typically three times per year.  Some years we might get an extra one, like a bonus track, but the rule of thumb is three.  This portends a time for miscommunication, technical difficulties, travel challenges, etc. However, it can also present a great opportunity to do a rewind on anything in your life that involves communications – so, essentially everything – but you can narrow down the tracks by knowing what house Aquarius rules in your chart.  You can go to Foxy Astrology and get a free birth chart to find this information.

In 2020, Mercury started all of his retrograde periods in water signs (Pisces 2/17, Cancer 6/18, Scorpio 10/14). In 2021 we have all three Mercury retrogrades in air signs:

  • Aquarius – 1/30 – 2/20 (Fixed Air)
  • Gemini – 5/29 – 6/22 (Mutable Air)
  • Libra – 9/27 – 10/18 (Cardinal Air)

Air signs are about communication, thinking, doing, and socialization.  Aquarius traditionally rules the 11th house of the zodiac, which is about the collective, kindred spirits – basically the people you would join a fan club with.

The first retrograde period is in Aquarius with no less than three other planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, and the Sun. Add in Mercury going retrograde at 26 degrees and that is a whole lotta of backtracking in Aquarius (fixed air).  Not to mention that this energy will be squaring Uranus in Taurus (fixed earth). This is significant because squaring energy brings on internal conflict, and in two fixed signs this conflict will require change to our perception of the things we love and value.

{ Note – Aquarius and Taurus are both fixed signs, which is a quality know for its stubbornness, but also having what it takes to get the job done.

Music of the spheres anyone?

Mercury and Uranus are harmoniously connected and work together to impact us and our minds. Uranus rules Aquarius, and Mercury rules Gemini — both air signs– and both signs that Mercury will be retrograding in this year.  Mercury guides our conscious thoughts and Uranus guides our unconscious thoughts; they just operate on different levels, like a “chord progression” to produce a harmonic frequency.

Mercury is the lower octave of Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius.  To understand the lower octave concept, first we have to establish that Mercury is a “personal” planet. This simply means that he impacts our daily life because he moves through the zodiac rather quickly, spending 14 – 30 days in each sign.  Uranus is an “outer” planet that moves slowly and impacts us generationally, spending about seven years in a sign.

During the first Mercury retrograde in Aquarius (while Uranus is in Taurus), our consciousness could take some major quantum  leaps.  This could lead to mental fatigue…especially regarding use of technical devices for communication. So basically, we will all need to take a timeout! If you have considered practicing meditation, this would be the optimal time to start. If you are already a meditator, get ready to connect to the music of the spheres!

Having three retrograde periods, all in air signs, will actually provide a great opportunity to tune into the multiple “Aha!” moments we will all be experiencing. This year is one that will definitely blow our minds!

Venus in Aquarius – February 1-25

Venus in Aquarius – February 1-25

Are you ready to fall in love?  Venus will be entering into Aquarius on February 1st and staying afloat there until the 25th.  In Aquarius, Venus can let her hair down and sometimes will let her freak flag fly… which will most likely be the case since she will be squaring Uranus in Taurus for almost a week (Feb. 3 – 10). Do you know what house Aquarius rules in your chart?  You can go to Foxy Astrology and get a free birth chart; look and see what house Aquarius is in and see how this free-lovin’ energy is going to impact you. Venus isn’t just about the way we love; she is also about the things that we value.

Co-ruled by Uranus and Saturn, Aquarius is a contradiction that makes sense in collaboration. In Aquarius we value not only the scientific hypothesis (Uranus), but also the proving of the theory (Saturn). Aquarius is Fixed Air, which also seems like a contradiction in terms.  How do you stop the unstoppable? The unpredictable?  Well, maybe it’s time for a bit of a shake-up in the love department and explore the possibilities as Venus gets her groove on.

There will be four other planets moving through Aquarius, and Venus will take a turn on the metaphorical dance floor with each one: Sun, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury Rx. This could lead to controlled chaos within your closest relationships, but also some much needed growth through exploration.

When Venus squares Uranus in Taurus, sudden changes to money and love could crop up.  It’s imperative to be flexible and observant.  How do you feel: fear, exhilaration, anger, elation? How can you best use this energy to breakthrough any stagnation and move forward?

We have been locked down for almost an entire year, so it is crucial that you get an opportunity to break free of this “Groundhog Day,” existence that we find ourselves living.  We have had many opportunities to review our closest relationships during this unprecedented time; what have you learned?  What do you love and value now that you have been “tested”?

Venus likes to do things differently while she is moving though Aquarius. You can use this energy to get back in touch with your best mates on a zoom call, join an online community that explores one of your secret desires, or start planning an “in-person” event for later this year.  Venus in Aquarius is in love with life and limitless possibilities.  We could all use a shot of that right about now!

Saturn square Uranus – 2021

Saturn square Uranus – 2021

They say that opposites attract, and sometimes that attraction causes enough sparks to make you pay closer attention. Where your attention goes, energy flows! This year Saturn in Aquarius will exactly square Uranus in Taurus three times: Feb. 17, Jun. 14, and Dec. 24.  These squares will help us continue making the transition between the Piscean and Aquarian Ages.  Indeed, we will feel this energy all throughout 2021.

A square in astrology creates tension; it’s considered a “disharmonious” aspect that often presents itself as an obstacle or a challenge.  This square will be operational most of the year, so expect the unexpected! Saturn is moving though Aquarius (fixed air) for the next 2.5 years and he is a co-ruler of this sign along with Uranus who is moving through Taurus (fixed earth) until April of 2026.

Fixed signs offer stability so that things can take root… eventually growing into something completely new. When a planet is moving through a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), it provides great focus.

Saturn and Uranus are essentially diametrically opposed. Their synodic cycle (the relationship between any two planets) spins around the creation of new ideas, fresh circumstances, and innovations – often resulting from a crisis point.  Saturn represents tradition, structure, law, rules, regulation, restrictions, and hard work. Uranus embodies freedom, eccentricity, innovation, sudden change, surprises, and miracles.

There are many myths that involve these two — usually in some kind of tussle.  In mythology,  Saturn – the lord of karma — is the son of Uranus (the sky god). The conflict embodied between these two, in terms of squaring energy, can create almost anything that the mind can conceive.

Take a look at what houses are ruled by Aquarius and Taurus in your natal chart.  This is where you can “expect the unexpected” this year, particularly around those three dates when the square perfects.  You can get a free birth chart on Foxy Astrology, and determine what areas of life this square will impact for you.

This is a building year; a year to focus on anything you want to be, to do, or to have. It would be the perfect year to start regularly meditating, doing yoga, or any practice that facilitates focusing your thoughts and energy on what you want to create for yourself and the world.

Saturn in Aquarius 2020 – 2023

Saturn in Aquarius 2020 – 2023

You can’t talk about Saturn moving into Aquarius without mentioning the Grand Conjunction that will take place on Solstice, December 21. The Grand Conjunction marks the end of an era and the beginning a  new 20-year cycle.  This cycle is part of a greater one where the Grand Conjunctions happen every 20-years in the same element (Earth, Air, Water, Fire).  So, the last Grand Conjunction took place in Taurus, an Earth sign.  Now we will be experiencing this conjunction in Air signs going forward for the next 200 years.  Air is a very different element than Earth, which is about stability and concrete things.  Air is less tangible, fast-moving, and concerned with the cerebral.

Saturn enters Aquarius on December 17, where he is the co-ruler with his father, Uranus.  Saturn transits are never easy.  Saturn is known as the Lord of Time, the Lord of Karma, the Great Guru, and he isn’t interested in making or taking shortcuts.  He is all about the journey and he is the embodiment of that old adage that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. This takes time and attention.

So, what is this journey about? Saturn in Aquarius is about progress, but that progress is gained through hard work and accountability.  Saturn made a brief entrée into Aquarius earlier this year that gave us an appetizer of things to come.  On March 21, 2020  – July 1, 2020, Saturn moved into the first few degrees of Aquarius (fixed air) and right away we experienced a lockdown on air travel due to the virus. So that meant that the airlines, airports, and travelers had to take on much greater accountability in order to open up air travel again; those restrictions and precautions are still in place today.

The last two times Saturn was in Aquarius were from February 6th, 1991, to May 21st, 1993, and from June 30th, 1993, to January 28th, 1994.  This was when Apartheid was dismantled in South Africa. If your birth date falls in either of those ranges, you’re experiencing your first Saturn return or are about to.  This is a mark of maturity; one of potentially three times in your life that Saturn will return to the exact degree it was at when you were born.

Saturn cycles are about 27 – 29 years in length and herald accomplishment and growth. Some of life’s most significant decision are made during challenging Saturn transits. Saturn helps us to determine and then focus on our personal best.  Whatever isn’t working for us will discarded or ripped away depending on where you are at in your cycle of maturity. So, you can either approach it the hard way… or the harder way.  Regardless, you will experience tremendous personal growth.

Jupiter will enter Aquarius on December 19 in preparation for the Grand Conjunction and will spend the next year in Aquarius. Jupiter is known as the Great Benefic.  Saturn is the Great Manifestor, but you will have to work for it and be patient. Saturn delivers on long-term plans and usually the results are greater and worth the wait and the work.

With Saturn in Aquarius with Jupiter for the next year he will continue to restrict, and Jupiter will continue to expand.  It may feel like two steps forward and three steps back, but it might also serve a greater purpose as we look to build innovative social structures that will address poverty, climate change, social inequity, and so many other issues that we have ignored or slapped bandages on.  These are such big and important issues that won’t be solved without Saturn’s hallmarks of hard work, integrity, and accountability.

Timing is everything! Saturn moving into Aquarius for the next two years and continuing the Grand Conjunctions in Air signs for the next 200 years is the dawning of a new Age; the Age of Aquarius.

Jupiter in Aquarius 2021

Jupiter in Aquarius 2021

Jupiter enters Aquarius on December 19, 2020 and stays in that fixed sign until December 30, 2021.  The Grand Conjunction, where Jupiter and Saturn conjunct at 0 degrees and 29 minutes of Aquarius, will kick-off a new Astrological Era, and one that begins a new 200 year cycle of Grand Conjunctions in Air signs.*

With Saturn in Aquarius for the next several years we will see an interesting push/pull in 2021 with Saturn restricting and Jupiter expanding.  This may be a blessing in disguise since Jupiter in Aquarius can be mind-bending and life-altering; with the breakdown of the patriarchy, we might need Saturn’s influence for a bit of moderation.  Also, Jupiter will take a brief dip into the deeply spiritual world of Pisces — from May 14, 2021 to July 29, 2021– before he takes his annual retrograde. But more about that later…

Jupiter is known as the Great Benefic.  He expands whatever he touches, and he rules the 9th house of knowledge and understanding. Aquarius is a fixed air sign and rules the 11th house of the zodiac; with Jupiter transiting here for an entire year, we will definitely see the expansion of the mind.  This will be of great value to all, as the collective will now start to find common ground, consider all options and opinions, display more faith in others, and show less attachment to the old ways of doing things.

The last time Jupiter transited through Aquarius was January 2009 – January 2010. For comparison, you can look back to that year and think about what changed for you.  Did you adopt a new set of beliefs?  Did you search for higher knowledge of self through spiritual study, traveling abroad, or humanitarian work?

Aquarius rules the 11th house, which is all about finding your “peeps”… but there can be a tendency for the individual to take a backseat to the whole.  It won’t be without its challenges; Aquarius can be quite rigid and stubborn, and Jupiter will be expanding these tendencies as well.

Jupiter will briefly move into the ethereal pool of Pisces from May 14, 2021 – July 29, 2021 before he enters his retrograde period and goes back into Aquarius.  Pay close attention to this period of time, because it will be a foreshadowing of what is to come in 2022 when Jupiter spends a year in Pisces.

How do you make the most of this Jupiter cycle in fixed air?  Look and see what house is ruled by Aquarius in your chart.  That is where you will feel the expansion in your life. Certainly, if you have a Sun, Moon, or Ascendant in Aquarius, this year will be a tremendous opportunity for you, but everyone in the collective will benefit from this energy.

With the jovial vibe of Jupiter in Aquarius, we can see more social reform and humanitarian initiatives. All of our beliefs will expand regarding politics, religion, lifestyles, freedom, and human rights.  The dawning of the Age of Aquarius is definitely here!

*Fixed signs are associated determination, persistence, and have a stabilizing impact similar to the roots of a tree or the foundation of a home.  There’s one fixed sign for each of the four elements: Taurus (earth), Leo (fire), Scorpio (water), and Aquarius (air). They flesh things out with concentrated focus, but also can be inflexible, stubborn, and single-minded.
