Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius – Jan. 30-Feb. 20, 2021

Ready for a rewind of the mind? The first Mercury retrograde of 2021 is here and will herald an entire year of Mercury retrograding in air signs.

Mercury goes retrograde typically three times per year. Some years we might get an extra one, like a bonus track, but the rule of thumb is three. This portends a time for miscommunication, technical difficulties, travel challenges, etc. However, it can also present a great opportunity to do a rewind on anything in your life that involves communications – so, essentially everything – but you can narrow down the tracks by knowing what house Aquarius rules in your chart. In 2020, Mercury started all of his retrograde periods in water signs (Pisces 2/17, Cancer 6/18, Scorpio 10/14). In 2021 we have all three Mercury retrogrades in air signs:

Aquarius – 1/30 – 2/20 (Fixed Air)
Gemini – 5/29 – 6/22 (Mutable Air)
Libra – 9/27 – 10/18 (Cardinal Air)

Air signs are about communication, thinking, doing, and socialization. Aquarius traditionally rules the 11^th house of the zodiac, which is about the collective, kindred spirits – basically the people you would join a fan club with.

The first retrograde period is in Aquarius with no less than three other planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, and the Sun. Add in Mercury going retrograde at 26 degrees and that is a whole lotta of backtracking in Aquarius (fixed air). Not to mention that this energy will be squaring Uranus in Taurus (fixed earth). This is significant because squaring energy brings on internal conflict, and in two fixed signs this conflict will require change to our perception of the things we love and value.

Music of the spheres anyone?

Mercury and Uranus are harmoniously connected and work together to impact us and our minds. Uranus rules Aquarius, and Mercury rules Gemini — both air signs– and both signs that Mercury will be retrograding in this year. Mercury guides our conscious thoughts and Uranus guides our unconscious thoughts; they just operate on different levels, like a “chord progression” to produce a harmonic frequency.

Mercury is the lower octave of Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius. To understand the lower octave concept, first we have to establish that Mercury is a “personal” planet. This simply means that he impacts our daily life because he moves through the zodiac rather quickly, spending 14 – 30 days in each sign. Uranus is an “outer” planet that moves slowly and impacts us generationally, spending about seven years in a sign.

During the first Mercury retrograde in Aquarius (while Uranus is in Taurus), our consciousness could take some major quantum leaps. This could lead to mental fatigue…especially regarding use of technical devices for communication. So basically, we will all need to take a timeout! Having three retrograde periods, all in air signs, will actually provide a great opportunity to tune into the multiple “Aha!” moments we will all be experiencing. This year is one that will definitely blow our minds!

Saturn square Uranus – 2021

They say that opposites attract, and sometimes that attraction causes enough sparks to make you pay closer attention. Where your attention goes, energy flows! This year Saturn in Aquarius will exactly square Uranus in Taurus three times: Feb. 17, Jun. 14, and Dec. 24. These squares will help us continue making the transition between the Piscean and Aquarian Ages. Indeed, we will feel this energy all throughout 2021.

A square in astrology creates tension; it’s considered a “disharmonious” aspect that often presents itself as an obstacle or a challenge. This square will be operational most of the year, so expect the unexpected! Saturn is moving though Aquarius (fixed air) for the next 2.5 years and he is a co-ruler of this sign along with Uranus who is moving through Taurus (fixed earth) until April of 2026.

Fixed signs offer stability so that things can take root… eventually growing into something completely new. When a planet is moving through a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), it provides great focus.

Saturn and Uranus are essentially diametrically opposed. Their synodic cycle (the relationship between any two planets) spins around the creation of new ideas, fresh circumstances, and innovations – often resulting from a crisis point. Saturn represents tradition, structure, law, rules, regulation, restrictions, and hard work. Uranus embodies freedom, eccentricity, innovation, sudden change, surprises, and miracles.

There are many myths that involve these two — usually in some kind of tussle. In mythology, Saturn – the lord of karma — is the son of Uranus (the sky god). The conflict embodied between these two, in terms of squaring energy, can create almost anything that the mind can conceive.

Take a look at what houses are ruled by Aquarius and Taurus in your natal chart. Mars conjunct Uranus – January 20, 2021

On Wednesday, January 20, at 12:00 pm EST, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are scheduled to be sworn into the offices of President and Vice President of the United States of America. Once they are sworn in they will assume the power of those respective offices.

About that same time Mars (6 degrees and 40 minutes) will be conjunct Uranus in Taurus (6 degrees and 44 minutes), not to mention that the Moon will be at the last degree of Aries (29 degrees) moving into Taurus and will be within a 7 degree orb of the conjunction of these two powerful planets.

This conjunction happens every other year and often brings perilous conditions. Mars is a warrior, ready for battle and Uranus is the unpredictable changemaker. Literally Uranus is known to make things shake and quake, and in the earth sign of Taurus chances are this conjunction could lead to explosive and eruptive behavior and/or events. Add in the Moon at the last degree of Aries, which is a critical degree (meaning the Moon is strengthened and therefore more powerful) adding to the fiery emotions of that Cardinal sign.

This is especially tenuous since this conjunction in Taurus will be squaring the Sun (0 degrees), Saturn (3 degrees), and Jupiter (7 degrees) in Aquarius. Also, the North Node (our future collective destiny) of the United States, is in Leo and squares this Mars/Uranus conjunction that involves the Moon (the Moon rules Cancer and the US is a Cancer Sun sign). So many intense aspects are aligning, as we are head into our country’s Pluto Return (2022-2024). We are already feeling the effects, but these will come to a pinnacle during this Biden Presidency.

If that isn’t stacking the deck for unforeseen obstacles and events, then consider that almost every President in US history that was elected near the Jupiter/Saturn Conjunction was either assassinated, survived an attempted assassination, or died in office. I think anyone that is brave enough, or crazy enough, to take on the office of the President of the United States of America is in for tremendous, transformative ride for the next four years. It certainly won’t be boring.

Uranus Direct – January 14, 2021

On January 14, 2021 Uranus will station to go direct. When a planet stations it “slows” down and changes direction. Uranus will slow and then “station” to go direct at 6 degrees of Taurus. He has been retrograde since August 15.

Uranus is the father of Saturn and known for shaking things up; sometimes literally, since when he is direct there are often earthquakes and other natural disasters. It takes him 84 years to make it around the Sun, which means he spends about 7 years in each sign and currently he is moving through Taurus. Taurus is ruled by Venus and represents the 2^nd house of the Zodiac. The last time he transited through this sign that encompasses the things that we love and value, it was in 1934 – 1941. This was the time of the Great Depression and of course WWII.

Known as the “Sky God” or the “Personification of Heaven,” Uranus is unique. He orbits on his side, he has a posse of 27 moons, he has at least 3 different ways to pronounce his name: Your-Ron-Us, Your-Anis, and my personal fave; Your-Anus. When things are going sideways or if miracles are happening in your life, it’s always best to check Uranus and see where he is transiting and see what aspects are involved so you can see where you might encounter the unexpected miracle or challenge.

When Uranus is retrograde it’s a great time to spread your wings and fly! Anything that is rote or stale in your life will prompt you to make changes. Sometimes that change is brought on from desire and sometimes it is a result of unexpected events beyond our control.

Now that Uranus is stationing direct at 6 degrees of Taurus on January 14, he will be 3 degrees away from Mars, fresh from his 6 month stay-cation in Aries and looking for trouble. They will be squaring Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius and trining Venus in Capricorn. You can expect social protests around humanitarian-minded issues. There could be an unexpected event, since Uranus is very strong when stationing, as he will be fully in his archetype of the awakener, revolutionary, rebel!

Look and see what you have around 6 degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius); this will be some challenging energy where you might have to make a move or change. Also, see what you have in the earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn); this will be some harmonious energy and could be very beneficial. Uranus will be transiting through Taurus until April of 2026. He will make a brief appearance in Gemini July 7 – November 7, 2025, which will give us a little preview of what we can expect for his 7 year transit in mutable air. He will retrograde back into Taurus until the Spring of 2026. Expect the unexpected and look for the miracles and the changes that Uranus will inevitably bring to the world.
